W. Randal Erickson, Ph.D.

After receiving his B.S. degree in biochemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Randy headed west to Oregon State where he studied biosynthetic chemistry under the tutelage of Dr. Steven J. Gould. While there, he gained experience in heterocycles and amino acid synthesis, stable and radio-isotope synthesis, and microbial fermentations. He received his Ph.D. in organic chemistry in 1987 and then served as a postdoctoral associate with Dr. Arthur G. Schultz. at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Here he studied synthetic methods of chiral aza-crown ethers and complex terpenoid natural products.

In 1989 Randy embarked on a successful career with Dow Chemical and Dow AgroSciences, centered on synthetic organic chemistry in both Discovery (project creation) and Early Stage Process (route selection, yield improvement) leading to delivery of crop disease and insect management field actives. He gained considerable expertise in designing and improving synthetic routes of target molecules, as well as securing the associated intellectual property via patent composition. Synthetic chemistry platforms include: poly functional benzenes, pyridines and quinolines; terpenoid natural products; neo-nicotinoids; and other heterocycles.

In 2008, an opportunity arose for Randy to join Lexington and direct its scientific efforts in the food health and wellness industry.  Since his arrival, he has managed the development of a greener route toward the high intensity sweetener sucralose and has expanded the facility‚Äôs capabilities to take on external contract work, both in analytical and synthetic chemistry.
